Uncle Grey's Top 5

The "Top 5 greatest rapper" debate is supposed to be a fun discussion between supporters of the artform. Too many times, I've seen this discussion turn into a mudslinging, disrespectful, rage debate that ends up shitting on the other person's coast. One thing that I never do is discard a person's Top 5 list. It's THEIR LIST!!!! With that being said, I'm gonna give you guys MY top 5 favorite rap artists of all time and an explanation why I put them there. Be nice.

1. Tupac Shakur

   - Because I can FEEL his music. I don't just listen to Pac; I absorb the wisdom in his words. "Even as a crack fiend..mama.. You always was a black queen mama." I was in 3rd Ward, Houston, TX when I first heard that bar and my homeboy's mama was on crack. She was a preacher before she got addicted. I saw how fast things changed for his family but that was still his mama. Pac was a teacher and I was the student. Nobody was ever like Tupac to me. R.I.P.

   
   

2. Notorious B.I.G.

   - THE smoothest mf I ever heard rapping. Me and Grump followed rap from the beginning. It started on the East Coast. They were amazing to us and KRS-ONE was one of my favorites when it started. Rakim, LL, Nas, Wu Tang...OMG!! Thanks to the East Coast for pioneering this shit. But Biggie..... Something else. As I listened to "Warning" I said to myself..."What made him say that?!" He only had one line (in his career) that I didn't like (Biggie fans know which one) but he was diabolical.

3. Scarface

   - By now y'all already know I'm from Houston, Tx. Nuff said. To me, Scarface is the reason that the rest of the world respects H-town rap (J Prince too). He had the coldest name in rap and he represented honorably. "Scarface"...when the movie was hot. People always talked about my voice, but Face had the voice and the VOICE CONTROL!! The East and West Coast had to respect my city because of Scarface.

4. Lil Wayne

   - Now this is where people REALLY gone start trippin. Remember, this is MY list and Weezy is a prodigy to me. I started paying attention to him when he was 12 years old and he was able to get on tracks with Juvenile and BG. Him and Turk were supposed the be the youngsters. Go back and listen to Lil Wayne at the beginning. Still fire. Then later he mentored people like Drake, Nicki and so many others...AND became the king of features. I don't even have enough time to underline all of his accomplishments.

5. Jay-Z

   - "What took you so long to say Jay...Unc?" Because...If the first two were still alive he would have even bowed down. No disrespect to Hov...but it was Pac vs Biggie for a reason. They were King Kong vs Godzilla at the time. Scarface and Lil Wayne were from the South, so they had to overcome obstacles just to be heard. Jay was a song-maker. The best of all of them when it came to range. And he understood that he wasn't a businessman....he was a business MAN.
